Issues: Electoral Reform

John feels passionately about electoral reform. We need to establish federal standards for elections and provide adequate financial resources for the states to carry them out. We need to go back to paper ballots which provide a verifiable paper trail. In addition there should be public financing for elections to level the playing field for all candidates and eliminate the effect of special interest money on elections. NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUY AN ELECTION

> John also feels strongly about ballot access for alternative parties. Currently in most states, including Tennessee, alternative parties have to get tens of thousands of signatures effectively monopolizing their resources just to get on the ballot. Increased ballot access means voters have more choice and more policy alternatives can be presented.

> Americans do not trust their electoral system.

> It is dominated by special interests to the detriment of individual voters.

> The two party duopoly stifles alternative views, limits choice, and blocks meaningful reforms.
